KSL Sports – New Schools Bring Big Changes To High School Hockey Playoffs In Utah

Great article mentioning Herriman Hockey as a legitimate contender for this year’s title. GO HERRIMAN HIGH HOCKEY!

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – For the past several years, the Affiliated High School Hockey Playoffs have been basically the same – Viewmont, Park City, Murray and Uintah in some combination, seemed to be the teams that were always playing for the championship.

Fifteen games into the 2020 season, the once-dominant Viewmont Vikings have only a single win and sit at the bottom of the division.

Some teams have taken joy in running up the score on the once unbeatable Vikings. New or new-ish schools like Farmington (9-4-1) and Herriman (7-7) are legitimate contenders for this year’s title.

Farmington’s Tyler Phillips has once again been tearing up Utah high school hockey with 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points in 14 games. His teammate Jake Coover has become a serious playmaker with 13 assists on the year.

Park City is still one of the top teams and has some serious strength in net with Colten McIntyre. He leads the state in goals-against average at  1.3 and a save percentage at almost 94 percent. As everyone knows, a hot goaltender in the playoffs can take you from contender to champion.

With that being said, don’t count out the Murray Spartans and Jack Nowicki. Nowicki has seen 318 shots in 9 games and managed to keep his save parentage at almost 92 percent.

This year’s championship is more up for grabs than at any other time in recent memory, which makes for some exciting and fun games.

There are a few games left for teams to better position themselves before playoffs begin in the first week of February.

Herriman High Hockey Places 3rd in State

Today, I find myself reflecting on the 2018-19 hockey season, and how grateful I am for so many things. For a selfless coaching staff who gave countless hours for the love and passion of hockey. Teaching our kids life lessons, and truly vested in the mental and physical wellbeing of each player. I am thankful for the time, energy and preparation they spent giving back to the youth of our community. They gave so much of their time without having a player or family member involved in the program. What amazing examples we have teaching our kids! Herriman Hockey is truly grateful to our coaches, their involvement, and being part of our family.

Thank you to our Board Members for helping make short term and long-term decisions that have molded this organization. We are unique in this state and I love how we all work together with a common purpose. You have helped create an amazing culture and a strong foundation that we continue to build upon……our program is flourishing and reaping the benefits from years of hard work.

To our volunteers who help keep things moving behind the scenes……..from recording games, to filling up the water bottles, manning the sin bin, holding team dinners, apparel orders, charity events and the end of year banquet. You help make life a little easier and less hectic, so THANK YOU!!!

Parents, family members and relatives for your commitment and dedication to helping your children follow their dreams. Countless hours at the ice rink, carpooling, scrambling from work to ensure ALL kids are in attendance, being a therapist, cheering in the stands, investing your personal time to our hockey family, socializing and connecting with others, and helping create a positive team culture where the kids can maximize their high school experience. I can’t forget those parents who have moved on with life since the graduation of their son or daughter…….we love to see you at our games, the gifts you surprise our current players with, and how we come together and the outpouring of support in times of need.…….we value your friendship and love how we are one big hockey family no matter of how much time has passed! We love you!

Last but not least……to the players for your blood, sweat and tears. Between juggling school, work, friends and family….each of you gave everything. As a collective group we worked together on systems, skills, communication, relationships, mental/physical adversity, understanding roles and responsibilities, and focusing on team unity. We won and lost as a team, and not as individuals. You pushed yourself to the extremes mentally and physically and overcame the things you thought you couldn’t. When called upon each of you stepped up, and no matter how much ice time you may have received you were willing to do what was needed for the team. You have grown more this year than I could have imagined, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. To our seniors……. thank you for all your hard work, leading by example, your lifelong friendship, and mentoring your teammates/friends to pass on your wisdom for generations to come. You left a positive mark on all our lives and we wish you the best as the next chapter of your life begins. Go get ‘em!

Thank You Brandon Wright……Welcome Jeremy Weiss!

Herriman Hockey would like to thank Brandon Wright for his years of service with Herriman Hockey as our Vice President. Brandon has been such a wonderful addition to our program of commitment, leadership, dedication and integrity with the adults and young players. We are so grateful to have had him for the last four years while his sons played with us. We appreciate all the hard work and time and effort he has shown our hockey family and we will always have a soft place in our hearts for his work. This program continues to develop and grow because of the excellent people, like Brandon, that are committed to provide this experience to our kids.

Herriman High School Hockey Board of Directors is proud to announce the addition of Jeremy Weiss as Vice President, replacing Brandon Wright. Jeremy grew up in Toronto, Canada where he was introduced to hockey at a young age. He played youth hockey up to the Ontario Junior Hockey League a Canadian Junior “A” league, and then went on to play college hockey at BYU. Jeremy is a certified USA Hockey Master Coach (highest coaching level within USA hockey) and has coached in many different roles through the years including the head coach of Brigham Young University in the ACHA. Jeremy runs a full-service hockey development school, Weiss Tech Hockey, which provides hockey drills, systems and other useful hockey information online. Over the last 7 years Herriman Hockey has built a great foundation that includes a D2 State Championship in 2016. We look forward to having Jeremy as a part of our Herriman Hockey family where he will play a crucial role in developing our coaches and players from our youth programs through High School. Jeremy will be involved in Herriman Hockey for many years to come as his four sons come up through the program. Herriman Hockey is excited for the future, the experience and knowledge Jeremy offers will help us compete at the highest level, while maintaining the high standards of the strong foundation we have built over the years.
